Chizani Village Water Well Completed: Community of Donors Makes it Happen
Chizani Village Well Project - Impact Dashboard
We are thrilled to announce that the Chizani Village Well Project has been successfully completed! This remote community in Malawi now has access to clean, safe drinking water thanks to the incredible generosity of 16 donors who came together to make this vision a reality.
This project was made possible by 16 extremely generous donors who believed in the mission of Water of Mercy. Your collective compassion has transformed an entire community and will impact generations to come. Every contribution, no matter the size, played a vital role in bringing clean water to Chizani Village.
From Muddy Pools to Clean Water
Before this well was installed, the water situation in Chizani Village was nothing short of critical. Families were forced to rely on shallow, hand-dug wells that produced murky, contaminated water completely unsafe for human consumption. These makeshift water sources were little more than muddy pools where families had to kneel in the dirt to collect cloudy, debris-filled water in whatever containers they could find.
The water was visibly contaminated and posed serious health risks to the entire community, especially vulnerable children and elderly residents. Children attending the nearby primary school had no access to clean water during their school day, compromising both their health and their ability to focus on learning.
Rapid Impact, Lasting Change
Funded at 100.9% of our goal on September 20, 2025, the well was drilled and the pump installed in just a single long day. Typically drilling and pump installation take several days. This remarkable efficiency means the community began benefiting from clean water almost immediately after funding was secured. An excellent concrete pad was also installed after the ground dried.
The drilling operation in Chizani was also particularly successful and struck water at just 30 meters. The boring company continued beyond that to a full 60 meters so that the well would have a prolonged lifespan. The boring crew also worked into the night to complete the well and insure proper functioning.
Today, more than 500 people in this scattered remote community have access to clean, safe drinking water. Students and staff at the nearby primary school can now drink safe water during the school day, supporting better health outcomes and improved educational attendance. Families no longer need to risk their health collecting contaminated water from dangerous, unsafe sources.
The village will establish a maintenance committee to care for the well, and with proper management, this vital resource should serve the community for approximately 75 years.
