Clean Water Comes to Chimbiranjala Village

Chimbiranjala Village now has clean water for the first time in its history. Thanks to the incredible generosity of 7 donors, the more than 700 residents of Chimbiranjala Village, along with the children and staff at the nearby primary school, have gained access to safe, clean drinking water, ending their reliance on a small, murky pond shared with livestock and a nearby river. The Chimbiranjala Village Well Project reached full funding on June 23, 2026, and the completed well was blessed on July 25, 2026.
This project was made possible by 7 generous donors whose compassion and faith in this mission brought Chimbiranjala Village to full funding on June 23, 2026. Every gift, whether a first-time donation or the latest from a longtime friend of Water of Mercy, played a real and irreplaceable role in making this well possible.
We want to especially recognize Beth J., whose extraordinary generosity funded 77% of this entire well in a single gift. That remarkable act of compassion carried Chimbiranjala Village to full funding and made clean water possible for more than 700 people and the children at the nearby primary school. We are profoundly grateful for her belief in this mission. Beth's commitment reaches across the mission: she has also helped fund the wells at Yesaya, Kaputeni Chisi, Mataliyana, and Theu villages.
We also extend deep gratitude to our faithful friend Jörg P., whose unwavering support of Water of Mercy continues to inspire us. With an astounding 45 donations to date across 18 different village well projects, Jörg P. exemplifies the kind of sustained commitment that makes lasting change possible. His generosity has helped bring clean water to Kapili, Kaputeni Chisi, Yesaya, Mchilawengo, Kajombo, Msese, Luwerezi, Khorwa, Msambanyifwa, Zebediya, Chibekete, Bundi, Zakariya, Chimbiranjala, Theu, Mataliyana, Chirwa, and Mkandawire villages.
We are also deeply grateful to David K., whose generous gift was among the largest given to this project and who has supported wells across the mission, and to our faithful repeat supporters Jill C., Alejandro E., and D.P., whose sustained giving, village after village, makes this work possible. From Crisis to Clean Water
More than 700 residents of Chimbiranjala Village have no access to safe drinking water. The only water available comes from a small, shallow pond of murky, contaminated water, or from a nearby river. Residents must crouch at the pond's edge to scoop this dirty water into buckets and containers. The water is shared with livestock, and a trench dug alongside the pond carries overflow to nearby crops, leaving a single open, unprotected source serving both the fields and the community's drinking water.
This area is at high risk for cholera and other waterborne diseases, presenting severe health risks to the entire community, including the learners and teachers at the nearby primary school who depend on this same contaminated source.

The Difference This Well Will Make
A properly constructed borehole in Chimbiranjala Village will serve more than 700 people, including the children and staff at the nearby primary school. This essential infrastructure will provide clean, safe drinking water directly in the village, eliminating the need for residents to collect contaminated water from a shallow pond shared with livestock or from a nearby river. The project will dramatically reduce the risk of cholera and other waterborne diseases that threaten this community, fundamentally improving the overall health and well-being of residents. School children will have access to safe water during their educational day, supporting better health outcomes and learning environments. Families will gain reliable access to clean water year-round, breaking the cycle of disease caused by their current contaminated water source.
With proper management by a village maintenance committee, this vital resource should serve the community for approximately 75 years.
Pump Blessing
On July 25, 2026, the people of Chimbiranjala Village gathered to celebrate the blessing of their new well. The water drawn from the new pump ran crystal clear, a world apart from the murky pond the community had depended on for so long. Father Petros celebrated Holy Mass during the ceremony, giving thanks to God for the gift of clean, safe water and asking His blessing upon the well and all who will draw from it for generations to come.
A funeral in the community fell on the day the blessing had been scheduled, so the gathering was smaller than at most well blessings. Even so, the joy and gratitude of the village were deeply felt. The people of Chimbiranjala promised to keep Water of Mercy and every donor to this well in their daily prayers.
In a moving act of thanksgiving, this generous community offered gifts of maize, groundnuts, and a goat. At the village's request, these gifts will be used to support families in need in other parts of Father Petros's parish, so that the blessing Chimbiranjala has received might reach outward to others. It is a humbling witness from a community that so recently was scooping dirty water from an open pond, and that now looks first to the needs of its neighbors.

The Power of Generosity
The Chimbiranjala Village Well Project is a testament to what happens when people answer the call to serve those in need. Seven donors saw a community crouching at the edge of a shallow, contaminated pond shared with livestock just to collect water for their families, and they responded with extraordinary compassion. You have given the gift of health to more than 700 people, the children and staff of the nearby primary school, and the generations yet to be born in Chimbiranjala Village. Never again will families here have to scoop dirty water from an open pond shared with their animals and their crops.
