Kabiza Village Water Well Completed: Clean Water for 700+
Kabiza Village Well Project - Impact Dashboard
We are thrilled to announce that the Kabiza Village Well Project has been successfully completed! This community in Malawi now has access to clean, safe drinking water thanks to the incredible generosity of 29 donors who came together to make this vision a reality.
This project was made possible by 29 extremely generous donors who believed in the mission of Water of Mercy. Your collective compassion has transformed an entire community and will impact generations to come. We especially want to recognize the co-founder's beloved aunt, whose extraordinary generosity at 82 years young demonstrates that age is no barrier to making a profound difference in the world. Every contribution, no matter the size, played a vital role in bringing clean water to Kabiza Village.
From Contaminated Water to Clean Water
Before this well was installed, residents in Kabiza Village faced significant water scarcity and were forced to walk over 1 kilometer to fetch water from shallow, hand-dug wells shared by both people and livestock. These open water sources were heavily contaminated with mud, debris, and animal waste, creating murky, unsafe water that posed serious health risks to the entire community.
Families had no choice but to collect this contaminated water in buckets and containers for drinking, cooking, and daily use. The dangerous water collection journeys consumed valuable time that could have been spent on education and other productive activities, while exposing community members to ongoing health risks from waterborne diseases.
Rapid Impact, Lasting Change
Funded at 100% of our goal on October 5, 2025, the well drilling was completed in just one day, an exceptionally fast turnaround for a rural installation. The drilling operation achieved a very high water yield, ensuring abundant clean water for the community. The pump and concrete pad were completed over the following days, with the entire project finished in just three days total.
The concrete pad at Kabiza deserves special mention. While each village's pad is typically different since they are often built by different contractors, this pad was exceptionally well done with a thoughtfully designed drain that directs overflow water into the adjacent farm field. This careful attention to detail ensures the well area remains clean and dry while benefiting local agriculture.
This remarkable efficiency and the excellent water yield mean the community will have reliable access to abundant clean water for generations to come. The well was officially handed over to the community during a Catholic Mass on Monday, November 10th, 2025, at the request of the villagers—a beautiful testament to the spiritual significance of this gift to their community. The pump was blessed during the ceremony, and villagers immediately began using their new well, drawing clean water for the first time in their lives.
Today, more than 700 people in this community have access to clean, safe drinking water directly in their village. The elimination of long, dangerous water collection journeys means children now have more time for education and families can focus on other essential activities. The high water yield from this well ensures reliable access to abundant clean water year-round, dramatically reducing the risk of waterborne diseases and improving the overall health and quality of life for all families.
The village has established a maintenance committee to care for the well, and with proper management, this vital resource should serve the community for approximately 75 years.
