Luwerezi Village has clean water for the first time in its history. Thanks to the incredible generosity of 10 donors, 870 people in this Malawi community now have access to safe drinking water, ending their reliance on shallow, muddy pits shared with livestock. Critically, this village has a rural clinic and maternity wing where mothers give birth and patients seek medical care, all without access to clean water until now.

🙏 A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Donors
This project was made possible by 10 generous donors who believed in the mission of Water of Mercy. We want to especially recognize Michelle S. from the US, whose extraordinary generosity funded nearly 58% of this entire well. Her compassion has helped transform an entire community, bringing clean water to a village clinic where mothers give birth and patients receive medical care.

We also extend deep gratitude to our faithful friend Jörg P. from Germany, whose unwavering support of Water of Mercy continues to inspire us. With an astounding 27 donations to date across 9 different village well projects, Jörg P. exemplifies the kind of sustained commitment that makes lasting change possible. His generosity has helped bring clean water to Luwerezi, Msambanyifwa, Zebediya, Mchilawengo, Khorwa, Kajombo, Msese, Bundi, and Zakariya.

Together, all of our donors exemplify how generosity can transform entire communities, one well at a time.

From Crisis to Clean Water

Before this well, the 870 residents of Luwerezi Village had to collect water from shallow, open muddy pits that are nothing more than puddles shared with livestock. These unprotected water sources are little more than murky brown pools along dirt paths where families must kneel to scoop contaminated water into buckets and containers.

The water is visibly dirty and unsafe for drinking. This area is prone to cholera and other waterborne diseases, presenting severe health risks to the entire community. Most critically, this contaminated water was the only option for patients seeking medical care and mothers giving birth at the village clinic. Pregnant mothers and in some cases newborns had no choice but to drink this water.

On March 6, 2026, the drilling team broke ground in Luwerezi Village and the community responded with pure, spontaneous celebration. As the drill cut deeper and the promise of clean water became real, villagers and children broke into joyful song and dance. It is a reminder of what clean water truly means to these communities: not just health and survival, but hope. The pump was installed just days later, completing the project in 3 days total.

Pump Blessing

On Sunday, March 15, 2026, Father Petros presided over the official blessing of the pump at Luwerezi Village. Approximately 100 community members gathered for a celebration filled with prayer, song, and dance. In a deeply moving expression of gratitude, community members offered generous gifts of plants, produce, grain, livestock, and money for the poor. It was a profound act of charity from a village that has known great hardship, and a powerful testament to the dignity and generosity of the people of Luwerezi.

The Power of Generosity

The Luwerezi Village Well Project demonstrates the incredible impact that can be achieved when donors answer the call to serve those in need. Ten individuals saw a community where pregnant mothers and newborns had no choice but to drink contaminated water from muddy pits, and they responded with extraordinary compassion. You have given the gift of health to 870 people, including the most vulnerable among them: patients at the clinic, mothers giving birth, and newborn babies. Never again will families in Luwerezi have to kneel beside livestock to scoop dirty water from a puddle.

Throughout the drilling and blessing, the residents of Luwerezi showed remarkable joy and gratitude, with singing and dancing at every step. It is our honor to serve this wonderful community. 🙏

Please keep Father Petros in your prayers as he continues his dedicated work serving the people of Malawi. 🙏
