Theu Village: 560 People, Clean Water for the First Time in Their History

Theu Village has clean water for the first time in its history. Thanks to the generosity of 10 donors, the 560 residents of Theu Village now draw safe, clean drinking water from a well of their own, and no longer walk more than two kilometers to a seasonal river that dwindles to a few shallow, muddy pools, reached only by descending a steep, heavily eroded slope into the river basin. The Theu Village Well Project reached full funding on July 23, 2026, the borehole was drilled on August 31, 2026, and the finished well was handed over to the village on September 2, 2026.
This project was made possible by 10 generous donors whose compassion and faith in this mission brought Theu Village to full funding on July 23, 2026. Every gift, whether a first-time donation or the latest from a longtime friend of Water of Mercy, played a real and irreplaceable role in making this well possible.
We want to especially recognize Beth J., whose extraordinary generosity funded more than 58% of this entire well in a single gift. That remarkable act of compassion carried Theu Village to full funding and made clean water possible for 560 people. We are profoundly grateful for her belief in this mission. Beth's commitment reaches across the mission: with this gift she has now helped fund seven village wells, at Yesaya, Kaputeni Chisi, Chimbiranjala, Mataliyana, Chirwa, Chakwanika, and here at Theu.
We are also deeply grateful to Karen P., whose generous gift was the second largest given to this well. Karen is a faithful friend of Water of Mercy whose support reaches back to some of our earliest projects, at Chizani and Kabiza Villages, and now continues here at Theu. Her steady return, well after well, is exactly the kind of generosity that makes this mission possible.

From Crisis to Clean Water
Before this well, the 560 residents of Theu Village had no access to safe drinking water. Their only source was a seasonal river more than two kilometers from the village, and for much of the year it dwindled to a few shallow, muddy pools scattered across a wide sandy riverbed. To reach it, residents had to descend a steep, heavily eroded slope into the river basin, then crouch beside the small pools and scoop dirty, brown water into buckets, basins, and whatever containers they had.
The water was shared with livestock and visibly contaminated with mud and sediment. Once their containers were full, families carried the heavy water back up the steep slope and over the long distance home, a burden that fell most heavily on the village's women. This area was prone to cholera and other waterborne diseases, presenting severe health risks to the entire community.

The Difference This Well Has Made
Today, 560 people have clean, safe drinking water directly in their village. No one travels more than two kilometers to a seasonal river or climbs down a steep, eroded slope to collect dirty water from shallow pools shared with livestock. The risk of cholera and other waterborne diseases has been dramatically reduced, and the exhausting daily ordeal of carrying heavy containers back up that slope, a burden carried most heavily by the village's women, is over. Theu now has reliable, year-round access to clean water, and no longer depends on a water supply that all but disappeared for much of the year.
A local water committee will care for the well, and with proper management this vital resource should serve the community for approximately 75 years.
Clean Water at Last
On August 31, 2026, the drilling team reached Theu Village and successfully drilled the new borehole, striking water in abundance. Father Petros reports plenty of water, and the video shows it: water ran out across the ground around the rig before the hole was even finished. After generations of climbing down into a drying riverbed to scoop brown water from muddy pools, the people of Theu watched clean water rise from a well of their own for the first time.

Pump Installed: The Village Is Using It
The concrete pad was poured and the pump installed over the three days that followed, and on September 2, 2026 the finished well was handed over to the village. Theu is drawing clean water from it now, in the village itself, and the long walk down to the river is over.

The Power of Generosity
The Theu Village Well Project is a testament to what happens when people answer the call to serve those in need. Ten donors saw a community descending a steep, eroded riverbank to scoop brown water from the shrinking pools of a seasonal river, more than two kilometers from home, and they responded with extraordinary compassion. Six weeks after Theu was funded, the village had a well of its own. You have given the gift of health to 560 people and to the generations yet to be born in Theu Village. Never again will the women of Theu have to make that long, steep climb carrying dirty water that puts their families at risk.
