Current Water Situation: The Gulumula Village Well Project was successfully funded on September 10th 2026! Most of the cost was covered by a single gift from one family of St. Paul the Apostle Parish in the Archdiocese of Chicago, with the balance met by a second gift from another parishioner of St. Paul. Both donors have chosen to remain anonymous. We will provide more information as soon as well drilling is completed. The 440 residents of Gulumula Village have no access to safe drinking water and depend entirely on a shallow river running below a steep bank of tall grass. There is nowhere to stand and draw from the edge, so residents wade into the river itself, standing ankle deep in the brown water and crouching to scoop it into basins and buckets. The water is stirred cloudy by their own feet as they fill container after container, then carried home. Father Petros reports that livestock and people share this same stretch of river, so families drink from the water the animals use. This area is at high risk for cholera and other waterborne diseases, presenting severe health risks to the entire community.
Project Impact: A properly constructed borehole in Gulumula Village will serve 440 people. This essential infrastructure will provide clean, safe drinking water directly in the village, ending the need to wade into a silty river and crouch in the current to fill a bucket a basin at a time. The project will dramatically reduce the risk of cholera and other waterborne diseases that threaten this community, fundamentally improving the overall health and well-being of residents. Families will no longer draw their drinking water from the same stretch of river their livestock use, and will gain reliable access to clean water year-round, breaking the cycle of disease caused by their current contaminated water source.
