Kaluluma Village Well Project

Kaluluma Village Well Project

Location: Kaluluma Village, Malawi Africa
Population: 750
Current Water Situation: The 750 residents of Kaluluma Village have no access to safe drinking water and depend entirely on a dambo, a marshy hollow in open grassland where water collects below the surface. There is no pool to draw from, only a shallow hole scooped into the wet ground, barely wider than a washing basin. Residents crouch over it and lift the dark, still water out a small dish at a time, waiting their turn as buckets and basins line the grass around them, then carry the full containers home on their heads across open ground. The dambo is shared with livestock and wild animals. A rural hospital serves this community, so the same contaminated water reaches the place people go to be treated. This area is at high risk for cholera and other waterborne diseases, presenting severe health risks to the entire community.
Project Impact: A properly constructed borehole in Kaluluma Village will serve 750 people, the largest community in the current pipeline, along with the rural hospital that serves them. This essential infrastructure will provide clean, safe drinking water directly in the village, ending the wait at a scooped hollow in the dambo and the slow work of lifting water out a dish at a time. The project will dramatically reduce the risk of cholera and other waterborne diseases that threaten this community, and a hospital treating those illnesses will no longer depend on the water that spreads them. The women and children who carry every container home across open ground will be freed from that daily journey, and families will gain reliable access to clean water year-round, breaking the cycle of disease caused by their current contaminated water source.
