Makunkha Village Well Project
Makunkha Village Well Project
Location: Makunkha Village, Malawi Africa
Population: 569
Current Water Situation: In Makunkha Village, collecting water means climbing down into the ground. The village is two small communities that are home to 569 people, and none of them has access to safe drinking water. What they drink comes from hand-dug wells. The deepest is a wide pit cut into dry, sandy soil, and women climb down its crumbling walls to reach a small pool of cloudy brown water at the bottom, scooping it into buckets with a cup while others wait their turn above with buckets of their own. Elsewhere, a shallow hole dug in a vegetable garden yields the same cloudy water, one cupful at a time. The water is shared with livestock and wild animals. This area is at high risk for cholera and other waterborne diseases, presenting severe health risks to the entire community.
Project Impact: A properly constructed borehole in Makunkha Village will serve 569 people, one well shared by both communities. This essential infrastructure will provide clean, safe drinking water, ending the dangerous climb into an open pit of crumbling sand and the slow work of scooping cloudy water out of the ground one cupful at a time. The project will dramatically reduce the risk of cholera and other waterborne diseases that threaten this community, fundamentally improving the overall health and well-being of residents. Families will gain reliable access to clean water year-round without risking injury or illness.
