Mazanga Village Well Project
Mazanga Village Well Project
Location: Mazanga Village, Malawi Africa
Population: 367
Current Water Situation: Every drop of water used in Mazanga Village comes from a dambo, a shallow, marshy wetland where murky water collects among mud and grass. The village's 378 residents have no other source and no access to safe drinking water. They must crouch at the water's edge to scoop the brown, sediment-filled water into buckets and basins, then carry the heavy containers home on a long journey back to the village. This burden falls most heavily on the women, who make the trip day after day. The dambo is shared with livestock, and this area is at high risk for cholera and other waterborne diseases, presenting severe health risks to the entire community.
Project Impact: A properly constructed borehole in Mazanga Village will serve 378 people. This essential infrastructure will provide clean, safe drinking water directly in the village, eliminating the long journey residents make to collect contaminated water from a marshy dambo shared with livestock. The project will dramatically reduce the risk of cholera and other waterborne diseases that threaten this community, fundamentally improving the overall health and well-being of residents. The women, who currently carry every container of water home along that route, will gain that time and strength back for their families and their work. Families will gain reliable access to clean water year-round, breaking the cycle of disease caused by their current contaminated water source.
