Water of Mercy
Msambanyifwa Village Well Project
Msambanyifwa Village Well Project
Location: Msambanyifwa ("sam-ban-i-fwa") Village, Malawi Africa
Population: 875+ residents plus nearby primary school
Current Water Situation: Msambanyifwa Village was successfully funded on January 12, 2026, thanks to 14 generous donors. Drilling was completed on January 29, 2026, at a depth of 66 meters, and the water flow was extraordinary. The well is now complete and more than 875 residents are drawing fresh, clean water for the first time in their history. No longer must villagers climb down into a dangerous 15-foot (5-meter) deep pit to collect contaminated water. Father Petros has instructed the community to begin using the borehole immediately while they await his arrival for the official blessing ceremony. Due to ongoing flooding in Malawi that began in late December 2025 and continued through February 2026, travel to the village remains unsafe. Father Petros will join the community for a formal pump blessing once bridge repairs are complete and the journey can be made safely.
Project Impact: Before this well was installed, the 875+ residents of Msambanyifwa Village faced one of the most dangerous water access situations we have encountered. The only available water source was a 15-foot (5-meter) deep open pit that children and adults had to physically climb down into to collect water. Residents descended steep, unstable earthen walls to reach the murky, contaminated water pooled at the bottom, scooping it into buckets and containers. The water was visibly contaminated and the area was prone to cholera and other waterborne diseases, putting the entire community at constant health risk. Today, more than 875 people, including children and staff at the nearby primary school, have access to clean, safe drinking water directly in their village. The elimination of the dangerous daily ordeal of climbing into a 15-foot deep pit means children now have more time for education and families can focus on other essential activities. School children now have access to clean water during the school day, supporting better health outcomes and improved educational attendance. The project has dramatically reduced the risk of cholera and other waterborne diseases that threatened this community, while removing the physical danger that residents faced every day. With proper maintenance and management by the community water committee, this vital resource should serve Msambanyifwa Village for approximately 75 years.
