Water of Mercy
Msese Village Well Project
Msese Village Well Project
Location: Msese Village, Malawi Africa
Population: 757 residents plus nearby primary school
Current Water Situation: Msese Village was successfully funded on December 8, 2025. Drilling began on December 23, 2025, but the team encountered unexpected challenges when they discovered significant mud deposits underground. On December 29, 2025, severe flooding struck Malawi, destroying a key bridge on Main Road 1 and stranding the drilling team's vehicles in Lilongwe. Despite these obstacles, the team persevered and the well is now complete. The community has already begun drawing fresh, clean water from their new borehole. Father Petros has instructed the villagers to use the well immediately while they await his arrival for the official blessing ceremony. Due to ongoing flooding that has continued through February 2026, travel to Msese Village remains unsafe. Father Petros will join the community for a formal pump blessing once bridge repairs are complete and the journey can be made safely.
Project Impact: Before this well was installed, families in Msese Village were forced to walk 1.5 kilometers to collect water from a shallow, hand-dug well shared with livestock. This contaminated water source had made the area notorious for cholera outbreaks, and the unsafe water posed a constant threat of deadly waterborne diseases to the entire community of over 700 people. Today, more than 700 people, including children and staff at the nearby primary school, have access to clean, safe drinking water directly in their village. Families no longer need to undertake the dangerous 1.5-kilometer journey to the contaminated water source, and the risk of cholera and other waterborne diseases has been dramatically reduced. School children now have access to safe water during the school day, supporting better health outcomes and improved educational attendance. Families now have reliable access to clean water year-round, breaking the cycle of disease that plagued this community. With proper maintenance and management by the community water committee, this vital resource should serve Msese Village for approximately 75 years.
