Water of Mercy

Msese Village Well Project

Msese Village Well Project

Population: 757 residents plus nearby primary school
Current Water Situation: Water scarcity in Msese Village has escalated to a critical and life-threatening level. Residents, including students and staff from the nearby primary school, are forced to walk 1.5 kilometers to fetch water from a shallow, hand-dug well that is shared by both people and livestock. This open water source is little more than a muddy pit carved into sandy soil where families must kneel to collect cloudy, contaminated water in whatever containers they can find. The water is visibly dirty and unsafe, heavily contaminated with sand, debris, and animal waste. This area has become notorious for cholera outbreaks directly caused by this contaminated water supply, presenting severe and immediate health risks to the entire community. The combination of the dangerous 1.5-kilometer journey and the cholera-contaminated water source creates an ongoing health crisis for families.
Project Impact: A properly constructed borehole in Msese Village will serve over 700 people, including children and staff at the nearby primary school. This essential infrastructure will provide clean, safe drinking water directly in the village, eliminating the need for residents to undertake dangerous 1.5-kilometer journeys to the cholera-contaminated water source. The project will dramatically reduce the risk of cholera and other waterborne diseases that have plagued this community, fundamentally improving the overall health and well-being of residents. School children will have access to safe water during their educational day, supporting better health outcomes and learning environments. Families will gain reliable access to clean water year-round, breaking the cycle of disease that has made this area notorious for cholera outbreaks.
