Tangatenge Village Well Project

Tangatenge Village Well Project

Location: Tangatenge Village, Malawi Africa
Population: 750
Current Water Situation: The Tangatenge Village Well Project has been fully funded! The entire cost of the well was covered by a single gift from a couple of St. Paul the Apostle Parish in the Archdiocese of Chicago. We will provide more information as soon as well drilling is completed. Tangatenge Village's water lies at the bottom of an eroded gully. The 750 residents have no access to safe drinking water, and what they drink seeps out of the ground at the foot of a bank of bare earth and fallen leaves. Women crouch at a small hole there and scoop the water out with a dish, filling each bucket a dishful at a time, while a long line of buckets and basins waits on the sandy path behind them. Every full container is lifted onto the head and carried up a steep, eroded track out of the gully and home along a bush path. The water is shared with livestock and wild animals. A primary school stands close to the village, and children who attend it draw from this source too. This area is at high risk for cholera and other waterborne diseases, presenting severe health risks to the entire community.
Project Impact: A properly constructed borehole in Tangatenge Village will serve 750 people, among them children who attend the nearby primary school. This essential infrastructure will provide clean, safe drinking water directly in the village, ending the wait in line at an open seep at the bottom of a gully and the climb back out with every full container. The project will dramatically reduce the risk of cholera and other waterborne diseases that threaten this community, fundamentally improving the overall health and well-being of residents. Children from the nearby primary school will have safe water close at hand, supporting better health. Families will gain reliable access to clean water year-round, breaking the cycle of disease caused by their current contaminated water source.
