Water of Mercy
Chivinya Village Well Project
Chivinya Village Well Project
Location: Chivinya Village, Malawi Africa
Population: 600+ residents plus nearby primary school
Current Water Situation: Chivinya now has a deep, cased borehole and hand pump delivering safe, clear water for drinking, cooking, washing, and basic hygiene. The community no longer depends on open hand-dug holes in the ground, no longer shares water sources with livestock, and no longer has to collect visibly contaminated water for their children. Clean water is available in the village every day, for everyone. A community-led maintenance group has been established to monitor the pump, handle repairs, and ensure that this well remains reliable not just this season, but year after year, with an expected service life of approximately 75 years.
Project Impact: Before this project, Chivinya’s water situation was an ongoing health emergency. Families, including very young children, were collecting water from shallow pits dug by hand and shared with livestock. That water was visibly unsafe for human use and contributed to repeated illness in the community. Today, the protected borehole and hand pump provide a reliable source of clean drinking water in the heart of the village. Families no longer have to choose between thirst and contaminated water, and children are no longer asked to drink from the same surface pools used by animals. The nearby primary school also benefits: students and staff can now safely drink water during the school day, which supports health, attendance, and the ability to focus in class instead of walking for unsafe water. This single project, funded entirely by one couple, has transformed daily life, health, and dignity for more than 600 people and for future generations yet to be born.
