Water of Mercy

Yotamu Village Well Project

Yotamu Village Well Project

Location: Yotamu Village, Malawi Africa
Population: 400
Current Water Situation: The Yotamu Village Well Project is complete. This was our first well project in rural Malawi, Africa. The well was funded, drilled, and installed from end to end in just 14 days. The results exceeded our expectations. With continued care, the well will last for three generations (~75 years)! This well was critical because it helped prove that the system we co-developed with Father Petros is both repeatable and scalable. This partnership allows Water of Mercy to operate with minimal overhead while maximizing the impact of every donation we receive.
Project Impact: Prior to well installation, villagers were forced to walk one or more kilometers each way to the nearest water source. The water sources were typically shallow, contaminated and muddy holes in the ground. Each year some villagers would suffer from disease related to water contamination. This resulted in sickness and often contributed to early death. The fresh water well should reduce the occurrences of water contamination and disease significantly. The village formed a committee for maintenance and management for the well. With continued care, it should serve the community for ~75 years! Please visit the Yotamu Village news page to see images and videos of the completed well.
